![]() ![]() Then, when I was in community college, after years of academic floundering, my younger sister handed me a book called Poetry as Insurgent Art. I was more likely to cut class and play video games. When I was a teen, reading the words of old white men was far from anything I’d do. It was in the world - doing graffiti and freestyling rap lyrics in the South Bay where I grew up, a first-generation Mexican American. ![]() ![]() My introduction to poetry wasn’t in books. That fellowship gave me a full ride to USF’s Master of Fine Arts in Writing program, and it opened a door to me and to others like me - people to whom the doors of higher education had long been shut. I was selected as the second-ever Ferlinghetti Fellow in 2015. And in 2012 he inspired the Lawrence Ferlinghetti Poetry Fellowship at the University of San Francisco. For more than 60 years Ferlinghetti championed writers outside the mainstream. ![]()

I enjoyed the spooky atmosphere and startling visuals. Each character has a different perspective on why the house is “haunted,” from scientific to paranormal. The atmosphere of the novel worked for me but the characters did not. However, I just read The Exorcist, also written in the 70s, and I felt that lived up to every bit of my expectations. Granted this book was written in the 70s so by the standards of the day it was ridiculously horrific and controversial. I think the praise actually worked against it because I felt a little let down. I was so excited to start reading Hell House because of its rave reviews and reputation for being the scariest haunted house novel. The sculptor Phidias, from whom came, among others, the Athena Parthenos and the statue of Zeus of Olympia, presents his latest creation - the sculptural decoration at the Parthenon - to some friends, including the statesman Pericles, on whose initiative the Parthenon was built, and the philosopher Socrates, all of whom are dressed in elegant contemporary togas. However, Twain wrote the character so well that you can totally believe that Tom didn't actually mean to be bad - he just was. He lacks respect for his elders and is outright disobedient when he is told to do something that he doesn't want to do. He doesn't think and most certainly doesn't care enough about his bad behavior to change it for the benefit of those around him. He's likable and frustrating at the same time. He sort of reminded me of a boy I grew up with who was bent on making trouble but still had enough charm about him to keep him out of it. On the other hand, you spent most of the time wanting to give him a really good spanking. On the one hand, his "innocence" in creating trouble was almost Anne-like (Montgomery) in nature. Tom Sawyer was rather a mischievous boy and a bit too troublesome for my tastes. I really wasn't sure whether or not I'd like this book and sort of had a hard time working my way through it.
